Captain's Log
With two small kids my time for outdoor adventure has diminished. However I'm now trying to find activities that will suit my new lifestyle. This blog will follow my outdoor pursuits in general and this year will focus a lot on my experimentation with sailing.
Surfing at Josiah's Bay in the British Virgin Islands
So we went surfing today in the BVI's. It was Dave, MJ and myself. MJ had never surfed but was super-excited. Dave had taken a lesson for an hour in Maui so their enthusiasm was contagious for me.
We are staying on Virgin Gorda so we had to take a ferry for 30 minutes over to the main island of Tortola. The ferry ride was beautiful as it was a stunningly hot and sunny day and the sea was relatively calm. The BVI's are beautiful from the water.
We landed in Road Town which I think is the biggest town on Tortola and probably the biggest in the BVI's. It was a very charming town with volcanic mountains as a backdrop.
We grabbed a cab ($21 bucks) to take us to Josiah's Bay. The drive was stunning as we had to drive straight up the mountain and over the other side. The view from the top was breath-taking.
Roads in the BVI's are VERY narrow with lots of blind turns, so driving with cabbies is not for the faint of heart.
When we arrived at Josiah's Bay we found there was a little place to rent boards. Unfortunately they had only one longboard so I rented a super short board. Needless to say that didn't work out well so we just alternated which worked out fine.
Both MJ and Dave did well and I caught some decent rides. The waves were big and the beach break was great...however the waves were coming fast and furious and didn't have enough spacing between them. So needless to say it was a workout to get past the break.
A good time was had by all.
