Gear Review and Trip Reports
Lac Poisson Blanc, Quebec

This is a trip report for a solo kayaking trip I took to the always beautiful Lac Poisson Blanc, in western Quebec. The lake is a huge body of water surrounded by Crown owned land. Essentially, you pay 6.50 a night for parking and head out and camp where you like. Over the years many sites have been developed and tent pads have been created. If you paddle around you will see where people have stayed and you can choose a spot.
I personally always feel it is best practice to use the sites that have been developed rather than disturb untouched portions of land.
You can see the island I chose to stay on in the Google Maps portion of this page (switch to Satellite view). The beach I stayed on faces south west and I had a spectacular view of the sunset.
About two hours after I arrived a wicked thunderstorm blew in. I always find the bad weather exciting, especially when solo. The winds picked up huge and I took shelter in my MSR Hubba one man tent. The tent was bomb proof to say the least. The storm lasted the better part of thirty minutes, I stayed warm and dry in my shelter.
Once the storm had passed, I decided to light a camp fire for some warmth. I had previously gathered enough wood for at least a five hour fire hoping to last into the night. Due to the winds my fire burned out a little more quickly than expected. I gathered another two hours worth of dead wood and sat down to enjoy my evening.
Dinner consisted of some sort of dehydrated pasta and a fresh apple. I boiled the water using my Optimus Crux canister stove. This took no time at all and before I knew it I was chowing down. After dinner I took a few videos and went to this nice rocky area to watch the sun drop below the horizon. It was fantastic. I'll post some more pics of the trip in an album.
I always love coming up to Poisson Blanc. There is a certain amount of excitement not knowing exactly where you are going to be camping. The last time I was here I discovered an elevated lake and a waterfall that emptied into Poisson Blanc.
I am heading there next weekend so hopefully I'll have more discoveries awaiting.
:)
Thanks!
Jason
