James Little: explore editor
New York, New York
I spent an hour or so on Earth Day in one of my favourite green spaces—Central Park in NYC. If you've never gone for a run in Central Park—especially around the Reservoir—you're missing out on one of the world's great experiences.
I was down in New York to attend the annual Northern Lights Tourism Awards ceremony. These awards are given to North American magazines and newspapers that publish stories focusing on Canadian destinations. I'm pleased to report that Zac Unger finished third in the magazine category of the competition with his piece "The Yankee Vs. The Yukon," published in our March/April 2008 issue.
I'd never met Zac before seeing him in New York. He's an impressive guy. He lives in Oakland, California, with his wife and three young children, and he writes for a wide range of publications—from Men's Journal to The Economist. But writing is only a hobby for Zac. His real job? He's a firefighter. He's also a very outdoorsy guy, having worked as a rafting guide for many years.
By the way, the winner in the magazine category was our very own senior contributing editor J.B. MacKinnon, for a piece published in British Columbia Magazine.
