2002_06_15 and 16 ACC Bow Hut

above Bow Valley

One sunny day in June of 2002 our little group took off from Calgary in the early morning hour, our destination Alpine Club of Canada hut located way over Bow Lake right at the edge of famous Wapta Icefield. Our group consisted of Andrew - my coworker, Ryan - at the time another coworker, Lori - our friend, Ela - my wife at the time and I.

After having nice “mountaineering” breakfast (sort of cholesterol special - eggs, bacon, sausages, hashbrowns, the good stuff) we drove to Bow Lake along picturesque highway 93 or as other call it - Icefields Parkway. From there it is very nice hike up the valley along very fast moving creek which empties into Bow Lake. In the winter one can travel right over the lake and over the creek along its deep canyon, in June we had to go way above it.

After reaching the post glacial bowl of the valley we had to deal with fairly short but extremely steep mountain side to get to the hut. There was not a soul there so we had the place to ourselves.

By the time we reached the hut I was dying of thirst so I made a little comment “that I would trade my eternal soul for a glass of cold beer”, well imagine my surprise when Ryan said - well, you’d better do the pact with the devil because……here comes beer. All that time he carried small keg of beer. Wow, let me tell you it was the best tasting beer I have ever had, talking about perfect timing.

After getting all organized we sat on a little deck in front of the hut, enjoyed all kinds of cold beverages, good food and watch avalanches coming down one after another off the rock wall at the end of valley. It was just perfect and picture perfect as well. Talking about pictures check them out by clicking here. Next day we explored the surrandings, climb a mountain adjecent to the hut, took lots of pictures. As the afternoon approached it was time to pack up and head back.

Well, if you want to experiece terryfing buetu of an avalanche book a trip to Bow Hut in June and you’ll see what I mean.
