Deck
In boating, the deck is the top surface of the body of a boat. For instance, in rolling a kayak, reference is often made to "front deck" (meaning the surface of the kayak in front of you as you're sitting in the boat) and "back deck" (obviously, the surface of the kayak behind you.
In canoeing, references are made to "open deck" (a canoe whose top is uncovered) and "closed deck" a canoe, usually a whitewater canoe, whose top is covered in a tarp or other fabric in order to keep splashing water out of the boat.
Spray skirts, the neoprene or fabric devices worn around the waist by kayakers and which seal the cockpit of the boat, are sometimes called "spray decks."
