Full James rapid, New Zealand
Full James is a rapid on the Waikato River, located northeast of the town of Taupo on New Zealand's north island.
The Full James was the site of the world whitewater rodeo championship in NZ in 1999 (and the preworlds in 1998). The event brought international recognition to the country's excellent paddling, although the competition days saw the tragic drowning of 24-year-old Irish paddler Niamh Tomkins.
New Zealand's native Maori people do not use the name Full James, calling the rapid "Ngaawapurua," which means "where the river divides."
Full James takes its name from a man by that name, who set up a lodge and would take people on boat rides through the rapids.
