Ontario Voyageurs Kayak Club (OVKC)
Ontario Voyageurs Kayak Club (OVKC) is a volunteer-run whitewater paddling club based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It claims to be Canada's first whitewater club. Its members include whitewater kayakers and canoers, though the bulk of the paddlers are in kayaks. Twice every paddling season, the club releases a paddling schedule, in or around March for the spring, and again in or around June for the rest of the summer and fall. As long as water is flowing, most weekends have at least some paddling activity planned. Paddling trips tend to be in Ontario, Quebec and upstate New York. Club members also organize non-paddling activities, such as hikes in the off-season, or social (i.e. pub) nights.
Membership fees are $40 (Canadian) per year per paddler, plus $10 for each additional family member. Membership in OVKC includes membership in the Ontario Recreational Canoe and Kayak Association (ORCKA). OVKC membership no longer includes membership into Whitewater Ontario, though that is available for an extra $15.
The club was founded in 1957 by George Siposs.
OVKC is the host of a very-early-season downriver race on the Credit River, in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. The 2008 event is scheduled for March 29 (1 p.m. start).
