Ram river, Alberta
The Ram river system is actually composed of several rivers including north ram, south ram, hummingbird, and ranger to name a few. It is located on forestry trunk road west of rockymountain house, along the way you pass several world renowned trout fisheries, which is why the forestry trunk road is nicknamed alberta's trout highway. if you are going for a day and wish to check out the sights the ram rvier falls are beautiful, but can get busy in the summer. longer trips you can hike almost anywere up here and thats the beauty of it all. trip idea #1 - lower ram up to the falls is only a day trip depending on how far you start below is a senic hike with very high canyon walls and many river crossing. great idea if you plan on fishing. trip idea #2 - humming bird tributary hike is much more remote, you will drive off the forestry trunk road to a staging area were the road will end and you can hike up the north side of the hummingbird without having to cross the river. This trip can go on for a far as you desire all the way up it splits off into smaller creeks and quite a ways up(likely over a day) there is onion lake a high alpine lake inside a mountain range. Trip idea #3 - South ram river hike starts at the hummingbird staging area but you have to cross the humming bird in order to get to the ram wich splits off directly across a couple hundred yards from the staging area. an hour hike up this trail you will stumble upon breathtaking falls, if you only go for one reason make it these falls. This trip is has decently kept horse trails for most of the hike but depending on how far you wish to hike there is several river crossings that will chill you bones with the tempurature of the water. about 6km up the south ram it splits off into the ranger and you can hike up the ranger which will keep you in the foothills. if you decide to continue past the ranger the ram will open up into a tree'd meadow just before you begin hiking into the mountain ranges.
Ram river sports is located in Rocky Mountain House and has many useful tips and has helped me with many unawnsered questions. Be aware that this area is grizzly country and bear sightings are not uncommon.
